What about insurance? What does the policy state? |
If you have insurance, do not make the mistake of living in the dark. No one likes to read the fine print but it is for your own good. Trust me on this one. Know what the policy states! I am guilty of not reading the details and as always it was a mistake. Every form of insurance has a policy stating what is and is not covered. Heavy emphasis on ‘not covered’. It is my experience to see basic policies cover basic services. Premium policies cover premium services. They are not created equally. Deciding if you need a speech therapy consultation is the first step but not the last. Call your insurance company and ask the following questions: Does my policy cover speech therapy? Are there limitations? Is there a co-pay? How much is the deductible? Are there any diagnosis codes not covered? This is very important. Most policies have strict limitations pertaining to specific diagnosis codes such as Autism or Developmental Delays. Remember-everything is given a ‘code’ in the medical field even a headache (R51.9). Today’s medical field does not always provide this information. Some clinics will verify coverage for you and some will not. Most will determine or verify the services your policy covers before you ever enter the clinic simply because they want to make sure everyone knows how they will get paid. If your insurance policy does not cover speech therapy; it will be a ‘private pay’ also known as a cash payment. Meaning, you will pay 100% out of pocket for your visits. Ask for a cash discount-most clinics will offer the incentive for cash-paying customers. Insurance policies typically can be reviewed online. Read the details and determine your coverage. Pamela |
